Common questions about the Life in the UK Test.
What is the Life in the UK Test?
It’s an official computer-based test you must pass as part of most applications for British citizenship or settlement (indefinite leave to remain). The questions are based on the official handbook, “Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents”.
How many questions are there, and what’s the pass mark?
The test has 24 multiple-choice questions and you have 45 minutes to complete it. You need to score at least 75% — that’s 18 out of 24 — to pass.
How much does the test cost and how do I book?
The test costs £50 and must be booked online through the official GOV.UK website at least 3 days in advance. Only book through GOV.UK — other websites may overcharge you.
What should I bring on test day?
You must bring the same photo ID you used when you booked the test, and proof of your address. If your ID doesn’t match your booking, you won’t be able to take the test and you won’t get a refund.
What happens if I fail?
You can book and take the test again after 7 days, as many times as you need — you pay the fee each time. Once you pass, your result never expires.
